[scode type="blue"]1.curious

adj.

If you describe something as curious, you mean that it is unusual or difficult to understand.

例句:

①There is a curious thing about her writings in this period.

②The pageant promises to be a curious mixture of the ancient and modern.

【You say that something is grotesque when it is so unnatural, unpleasant, and exaggerated that it upsets or shocks you.】

[scode type="blue"]2.fall out with

To stop being friendly with someone because you have had a disagreement with them.

例句:

①Somebody talked about a family member they had a falling out with .

②And Bree's falling out with her friends Bree led to some dangerous behavior.

When people bicker, they argue or quarrel about unimportant things.【v.

The two women bickered constantly.

When people quibble over a small matter, they argue about it even though it is not important.【v.(为琐事)争辩,争吵】

Council members spent the day quibbling over the final wording of the resolution.

[scode type="blue"]3.put

When you put an idea or remark in a particular way, you express it in that way. You can use expressions like to put it simply and to put it bluntly before saying something when you want to explain how you are going to express it.

例句:

①He doesn't, to put it very bluntly, give a damn about the woman or the baby.

②You can't put that sort of fear into words.

and then I need you to...Hmm, how do I put it?
IMG_0095.PNG
IMG_0096.JPG

除此之外,再补充一个很常见的表达:stay put 保持不动 【 to remain in one place or position】

《咱们裸熊》:stay put and you will be fine.
IMG_0097.PNG

IMG_0099.JPG

[scode type="blue"]4.have one’s decency

IMG_0100.PNG

这里补充一个短语:did not have the decency to do sth (出于礼貌)应该做(但没做) 【If you say that someone did not have the decency to do something, you are criticizing them because there was a particular action which they did not do but which you believe they ought to have done.】

例如:

Nobody had the decency to inform me of what was planned.

[scode type="blue"]5.adieu

再见[/scode]
IMG_0101.PNG

Adieu means the same as goodbye .

例句:

①'Gentlemen, I bid you adieu.'

②'This is adieu, and not goodbye.'

Yeah, you are probably right, Ciao-ciao.
IMG_0105.PNG

Whatever you need, Ta-Ta.
IMG_0106.PNG

IMG_0109.PNG

William Golding的小说《Lord of the Flies》也出现了这个表达:

IMG_0110.JPG

[scode type="blue"]6.no such

such a beautifu girl

such an honest boy

在作“后位限定词”时,前面跟的一般是“no/some/any/every/either/either”这样的中位限定词。

比如:

《经济学人》一篇关于外太空生物的文章《Come out, come out, wherever you are》出现了“some such ”:

IMG_0112.JPG

动画片《咱们裸熊》出现了:all/no such
IMG_0113.PNG

IMG_0114.PNG

the last few days

[scode type="blue"]7.whirl

If something or someone whirls around or if you whirl them around, they move around or turn around very quickly.

例句:

①He was whirling Anne around the floor.

②The smoke began to whirl and grew into a monstrous column.

give sth a whirl 【If you decide to give an activity a whirl, you do it even though it is something that you have never tried before.】

例如:

We decided to give it a whirl.

除此之外,“give sth a shot/crack ”“suck it and see ”也是其同义表达:

So I am gonna gave him another shot.

IMG_0116.PNG

All you need to do now is to give both of you a crack at it, alright?
IMG_0117.PNG

[scode type="blue"]8.doll up

If a woman dolls herself up, she puts on smart or fashionable clothes in order to try and look attractive for a particular occasion.

例句:

We used to doll ourselves up and go into town.

【If someone preens themselves, they spend a lot of time making themselves look neat and attractive; used especially if you want to show that you disapprove of this behaviour or that you find it ridiculous and amusing.】

例如:

50% of men under 35 spend at least 20 minutes preening themselves every morning in the bathroom.

IMG_0119.PNG
当然,“打扮”除了用“doll up”还经常用一个短语:scrub up【to dress yourself up.】

Wow, do you scrub up well?
IMG_0120.PNG

If you get yourself up in a particular kind of clothing, you dress in that clothing.

例如:

They knew how to get themselves up in those days.

spruce sb/sth up

tart sb/sth up

gussy sb/sth
