《The Midnight Library》
“Library”
Library should not be viewed just as a repository for book, but an oasis of peace and sanity among the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Although Internet makes it possible for us to read books and attend classes in the comfort of our own home, such a condition is not conducive to learning. All too often, we are distracted by pop-ups, instant messages and computer games. By contrast, library provides an ideal place in which students can concentrate on their work without the distractions of digital gadgets.
The protagonist Nora, who had just broken up with her boyfriend, her favourite cat had died, she felt desperate living in the world. Her life was full of loneliness and misery. She wanted to die, and after death she came to a library, where each book represented a different life and she could have a fresh start.
So if you can live a different life, would you choose to go back to your life and start again?
“You don't go to death. Death comes to you.”
这是一种“You can have everything and feel nothing ”的感觉。
Marriage was something you did at the appropriate time with the nearest available person. A game where you grabbed the first person you could find when the music stopped.
Marriage was something that was not only inevitable but also inevitably miserable.
They told me that my problem isn't actually stage fright. My problem is life fright.
dodgy
terse
come to a halt
fall out with
1.far be it from sb to do sth
2.on one's wavelength
3.drown out
4.more of sth and less of sth
5.thaw
[scode type="blue"]1.far be it from sb to do sth[/scode]
used as a way of telling someone that you do not want to criticize them, disagree with them, or say something negative when in fact this is what you are doing.
例句:
Far be it from me to criticize, but aren’t you being a little unreasonable?
[scode type="blue"]2.on one's wavelength
If two people are on the same wavelength, they find it easy to understand each other and they tend to agree, because they share similar interests or opinions.
例句:
It's great to work with people who are on the same wavelength .
[scode type="blue"]3.drown out
to prevent a sound from being heard by making a louder noise.
例句:
Both the speaker and his speech were drowned out by the disapproval of the crowd.
Steve Jobs
Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out you own inner voice.
[scode type="blue"]4.more of A and less of B
[/scode]
xxx is more of a boon and less of a bust.
在文章中,举出的例子是“less of a loan and more of a gift”
[scode type="blue"]5.thaw
When ice, snow, or something else that is frozen thaws, it melts.
例句:
①It's so cold the snow doesn't get a chance to thaw .
②The ground has thawed .
“thaw”在这里取它的本义,当然它还有一个拓展义,表示“(使)(关系)回暖,缓和,改善 ”【If something thaws relations between people or if relations thaw, they become friendly again after a period of being unfriendly.】
例如:
It took up to Christmas for political relations to thaw .
《China Daily》一篇关于功夫外交的文章《Maybe it's time to practice 'kungfu diplomacy'》也出现了这个表达:
